Expert insights. No pressure.
- How long will my dental exam take? Your periodontal exam at Premier Periodontics typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the condition of your gum health and oral structures.
- Is a periodontal exam painful? No. Our exams are gentle and non-invasive. While some sensitivity may occur if your gums are inflamed, we take every measure to keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout your visit.
- How do I properly prepare for a dental exam? Maintain good brushing and flossing habits leading up to your visit. On the day of your appointment, brush your teeth and avoid eating or drinking beforehand. Feel free to wear comfortable clothing.
- What exactly does a dentist look at during a dental exam? We examine your gums, teeth, jawbone, and other oral structures. We also look for signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other concerns. It’s a great time to ask questions about your oral health, too.
- How often should I change my toothbrush? Every 3 months is best. If you have gum disease, you may need to change your toothbrush every 4 to 6 weeks to prevent bacterial buildup and reinfection.
- Is there anything I should avoid before going to my dental exam?
Skip the mouthwash and gum. While fresh breath is nice, it can mask important signs like bad breath or irritation, both of which help us detect underlying oral health issues.
